Day of Ashura

Although Imam Hussain is the prophet Muhammad's grandson and the third Shia Imam but he is not only belonged to Shia Muslim people. Each year, people from different nations with different religions flock to the city of Karbala to visit the holy shrine of Imam Hussain. They admire Imam Hussain and cry for him when they heard the story of Ashura.

Day of Ashura was the day in which Imam Husayn, and all 72 of his companions were violently killed and beheaded one by one and all their women and children were captured.

Imam Hussain was the prophet Muhammad’s grandson and the third Shia Imam who prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had stated about him:

“Hussain is from me and I’m from Hussain” (Sunan at-Termizi, V.6, No.3775)

Each year on the first ten days of Muharram especially on the day of Ashura, Shia Muslim people dressed in black, participate in the mourning ceremonies and processions to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussain (PBUH) and all of his companions.

Day of Ashura is a day in which Imam Husayn (the prophet Muhammad’s grandson) and all 72 of his companions including his family members were killed violently at the battle of Karbala and all their women and children were captured on this day. Thus, each year all the people from different religions participate in the mourning ceremonies and processions to commemorate the day of Ashura and memorize the goals of Imam Husayn.
